James Broome, a production sound graduate from the National Film and Television School. I have had an interest in sound since a very young age. It wasn’t however until my early teens when I brought my first ‘home theatre kit’ that my passion for film and television sound started to grow. My theatre kit unfortunately developed into an expensive hobby - however the love of production sound has turned into a career. I began my studies at the NFTS after a career with Bose UK Ltd, where I started at the age of 16 as a weekend sales assistant and continued to become a product and technologies training manager at the first Bose European flagship store in the west end of London. The ‘Sound Recording for Film and Television’ course at the NFTS was a fantastic experience. Although I had a firm knowledge of sound reproduction and professional cinema upon joining the NFTS, the world of file based recording, location mixing, time code and even microphones was somewhat alien to me! Knowledge, confidence, ability and my passion for the craft steadily grew over the 18 months to follow. The course, overseen by NFTS head of sound Andrew Boulton, was based almost entirely on visits to the school by working industry professionals, who shared their knowledge, skills and years of experience in a variety of lectures and practical workshops covering all aspects of production sound. Today, I am an able member of any sound department, a renowned perfectionist and team player always looking to broaden my knowledge in all aspects of production sound. I have mixing credits on many shorts, as well as boom and assistant work in TV drama broadcast on the BBC and ITV. I am also keen to broaden my knowledge of music recording, both studio and live, and sound post production for film. The construction of my ‘location rack’ is underway; however, it is set to be a long and costly exercise. I will continue to purchase equipment as per my requirements and as it becomes wise to do so. I am good with a soldering iron and am often asked to construct looms, custom multi-cores, and make cable repairs. I own a set of location microphone leads and probably any audio adapter you could name! Preferred cable on location is either Van Damme or Canare. I am proficient with the vast majority of production sound equipment used on today’s film and television productions, a list of familiar recorders, mixers and radio systems is below Recorders Sound Devices 702T, 744T, 788T Zaxcom Deva V, IV, 16, 5.8 Tascam HD-P2 Portable Mixers SQN portable mixers Sound Devices 302, 442 Location Mixers Audio Developments AD 147 Mercury Mixer Audio Developments AD 149 Audio Developments AD 255 Radio Systems Audio Ltd.
